* A rice bag is a special bag that will keep your feet warm at night or soothe aching muscles. It comes from your kitchen and your sewing room. It also makes a great gift. There isn't any restriction to size, so have fun!!!

* Inner Bag:

  1. Cut a 10" square of muslin.
  2. Fold in half and seam (1/4") across one short end and up the long side. Turn.
  3. Fold the raw edges 1/4" to the inside and finger press.
  4. Fill with 1-1/2 cups white, long-grain rice (NOT instant, NOT brown).
  5. You can add some stick cinnamon, cloves, lavender, dried lemon peel, etc. if you want scent, or you can just leave it plain.
  6. Sew the opening closed (from the right side) with 2 rows of stitching (or you can use a serger).

* Outer Bag:

  1. Cut, create or quilt a 5-1/2" x 20-1/2" piece of fabric (this is the fun part).
  2. Narrow hem the short ends (fold 1/4" to inside, then fold 1/4" again), finger press and stitch with one row of stitching.
  3. Lay the piece down with the right side up, fold the ends toward the center and overlap the ends so the piece measures 9".
  4. Stitch the long sides with a 1/4" seam. Turn.
  5. Stuff the first bag inside the second bag through the overlapped opening.

* To Use:

Heat in the microwave on high for 1 to 1-1/2 minutes (this will depend on the size of your rice bag and your microwave--you may need more time).

DON'T WASH THE INNER RICE BAG!!! You ever see washed rice?! :) Wash only the outer, cotton case. Once heated, you have a nice, warm bag to soothe away those achy muscles, especially in the neck from bending over your machine or quilt frame too long :)

Heat lasts 10-20 minutes, again depending on size.....
